How to Connect a Trailer to Your Ram Truck

Park of the appeal of a pickup truck is just how powerful it is, and that power can be used to tow a huge amount of weight. Of course, properly securing that trailer is incredibly important, and we here at Salsbury's Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram would love to give you the right steps so you can continue your day safely and securely.

Connecting a Receiver Hitch

  • Insert the draw bar and lock it in place with the pin and counter pin.
  • Backup the truck and line up the hitch ball with the coupler.
  • Crank the trailer jack down to lower the coupler onto the ball. You'll hear a snap as it makes a connection. Crank the jack until it's in its upmost position, then release the jack and lock it into place.
  • Connect the safety cables, crisscrossing them under the harness and only connect them to the safety hooks.
  • Plug in the wires for your lights and brakes.

Connecting a Fifth-Wheel Hitch

  • Grease the locking plate to minimize friction when the king pin and plate connect. Then, unlock the latching mechanism. Raise or lower the trailer jack as needed.
  • Backup your truck to connect the coupler with the king pin. When fully locked, the armature will engage automatically. Text the connection by putting your truck in drive and moving forward a bit. Then put your truck back in park.
  • Connect the safety chains, the trailer wiring, and the breakaway switch.
  • Raise the trailer legs so your truck is supporting the trailer weight, then close your tailgate.
  • Once it's all connected, check your brakes, then select the proper trailer brake type.
  • Use the trailer brake control to set the gain and ensure the brake power is to your liking. Finally, double check all lights are working properly.

Connecting a Gooseneck Hitch

  • Get the hitch ball directly under the coupler, then lower the trailer onto the ball.
  • Connect safety chains and breakaway cable, latch the coupler, then connect the wiring harness.
  • Lift the trailer stands to their uppermost positions.
  • Check lights and brakes to ensure the wiring is all connected properly.
