Quick Specs of the 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel

This towing and hauling beast comes with a 3.0L turbocharged diesel-fueled V6 engine. This superstar of diesel tow/haul turns out a Best-in-Class 480 lb-ft of torque and 260 horsepower. It also has Best-in-Class towing capacity. It's able to pull a whopping 12,560 pounds! Ford and Chevy diesels aren't even close to those numbers.

The 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel Gets Great Fuel Economy

With all that raw power you'd think you wouldn't want to know how much diesel fuel it uses. However, you'd be wrong, because it sips fuel like fine wine. The 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel gets 22 miles per gallon (MPG) in the city and an impressive 30 MPG driving on the highway. A most efficient combination of fuel and power, wouldn't you say? With specs like these, it's easy to see that the EcoDiesel beats the pants off the competition.

The Pantsless Competition of the 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel

The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Turbo Diesel Duramax sports a 3.0L turbocharged inline 6-cylinder engine. It produces only 460 lb-ft of torque. It does develop slightly more horsepower than the 2020 Ram 1500 Eco Diesel at 277 horsepower. But it's torque you want in a work truck, not horsepower. The EPA has not yet tested this engine for MPG figures yet, but it's hard to imagine it topping 30 mpg highway.

The 2019 Ford F-150 Turbo Diesel has a 3.0L turbocharged V6 engine. It generates even less torque than the Chevy, at 440 lb-ft. The Ford really falls flat in the horsepower department, at just 250 horses. EPA estimates this engine gets the same MPG rating as the 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, 22 MPG in the city and 30 MPG on the highway. However, when you're getting less torque and horsepower, it's really not the same, is it?

The 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel Crushes Its Competitors' Panting Engines

Comparing engine to engine, the 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel out torques the 2020 Chevy Duramax Turbo Diesel by 20 lb-ft, 480 lb-ft for the Ram and 460 lb-ft for the Chevy. The Chevy has just 17 more horsepower than the RAM, but like we said before, it's torque that tows and hauls, not horsepower.

Measured against the Ford engine, it's an even sadder tale for the competition. The Ford Diesel V6 can only develop 440 lb-ft of torque. The 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel whips the Ford by 40 lb-ft of torque, at 480 lb-ft. The Ram EcoDiesel outstrips the Ford Diesel by 10 horsepower.
